As we move through the early weeks of 2026, the picture at home remains mixed: some encouraging signs in the data, alongside inflation that’s proving slower to shift than many hoped.
Unemployment fell in December to 4.1%, job vacancies lifted, and household spending grew. At the same time, inflation stayed elevated, with CPI running at 3.8% over the year to December. Markets and commentators are now watching closely to see what that means for interest rates in the months ahead.
The Australian dollar held around US70c, while the ASX 200 rose through January to 8,869.
